VC's 2019 New year Message

VC's 2019 New year Message

Let me convey my appreciation and thanks to all students and staff of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) for the successes recorded in 2018. It is pertinent to note that, we still have much more territories to conquer in the years ahead, I am therefore appealing to us to spare no effort in the realization of the Universityís mandate in 2019.

The year 2018 was characterized with various landmark achievements and this would not have been possible without your dedication and commitment to the growth of the University. In 2018, the University met and surpassed her targets in some key areas. We are indeed very thankful to God almighty!

In the course of 2018, our staff and students demonstrated their academic prowess in various competitions by winning awards/laurels both locally and internationally, this was made possible by the concerted effort by the Management in active collaboration with the Governing Council in ensuring that an excellent environment is provided for learning, research and innovation to thrive.

From the day I assumed office as the Vice Chancellor of AKSU, my fidelity to the cause of building a University we can be proud of cannot be in doubt. Last year, National University Commission (NUC) team visited our University for a routine accreditation exercise, it is noteworthy that, all academic programmes in AKSU have been fully accredited. This is the outcome of our unwavering commitment to be one of the leading Universities in Nigeria.

The importance of strategic planning in building a young University like ours cannot be over-emphasized. To this end, we are developing a-ten (10) year Strategic Plan for the University which would serve as a roadmap for the future developmental strides till the year 2029. This would also ensure stability is maintained in our changing environment and increasing competition are constructively responded to during the period under consideration.

In the past three (3) years, Akwa Ibom State Government, under the pragmatic leadership of His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has shown commitment towards the continuing growth and development of the University. Amongst other projects, the internal roads in Obio Akpa Campus of the University have been constructed, this has made the environment more conducive for learning and movement faster within the campus.

We shall sustain the strategic development of the ICT infrastructure in 2019. Currently, many administrative processes are gradually being automated and we are also deploying the use the ICT to facilitate teaching, learning, critical thinking and peer discussions. So, our laboratories and classrooms are rapidly being upgraded with Apple iMac Computers, Smart/Interactive Boards and other learning equipment. It can only get better!

In the past two (2) years of my administration, progress has been made in establishing and building upon linkages with various international academic institutions with the view to improving collaboration in teaching and research in the University, this necessitated our decision to commence the construction of the state-of-the-art Smart Classroom. This facility would ensure seamless interaction between our students and lecturers from these reputable and specialized Universities abroad, collaboration and exchange of ideas with their peers on a real-time basis via Video Conference technology. The project which is 70% ready, is to enhance learning in classroom and beyond.

Some milestones have been achieved towards commencing academic activities in our research-oriented School of Post Graduate Studies in 2019. The School intend to collaborate effectively with Industry and ensure research outputs are ultimately applied to solve societal problems for the benefit of mankind. However, we are expecting the NUC team to visit the University any time soon for Resource Verification.

We are not oblivious of the challenges ahead of us in 2019, the foundation of our University is sound and by the grace of God, we look forward to the future with hope and confidence.

On behalf of the Governing Council and Management, let me once again appreciate AKSU community for their support thus far in the realization of the goals and objectives of the University.

I wish you all a very prosperous 2019 and God bless you!

Professor Eno J. Ibanga, fnip
