The Vision Statement

The Department of Microbiology focuses on providing demand-driven training and skills especially in modern and emerging areas of microbial technology through teaching, research and community service.

The Mission

  • To offer a research-led teaching environment where students are well informed by the very latest advances in microbiology.

  • To ensure that students will transit smoothly into the wider world well equipped in modern microbial techniques.

  • To ensure our courses apply knowledge to real world challenges and we do this through innovative teaching and using the latest learning technologies.?

The Philosophy and Objectives

The Philosophy

  • The underlying philosophy of the Department of Microbiology is an offshoot of that of AKSU which is enshrined in the Akwa Ibom States philosophy of Education.

  • Providing a strategic vehicle for meeting the undergraduates, postgraduates, research development R&D needs of the State and Nigeria at large. This is achievable through training, manpower development and innovative research.

  • The Department is committed to acting as agent or catalyst for attaining and efficient utilization of knowledge to unlock the hidden treasure of nature in the Niger delta for human wellbeing and self-sufficiency.

  • The development of appropriate skills, mental ability, sound physical and social attitudes for attaining and contributing to the national development. The intellectual capacity of individuals has ways of enhancing understanding and appreciation of their physical and cultural environments.
Objectives

  • Microbiology programme is designed to train students to meet the challenges of humans curiosity about nature as a fundamental motivation for scientific exploration and enquiries. Consequently, the Department is guided by the following general and specific objectives:

  • To provide comprehensive and sound education in specialized areas of Microbiology with a view to equipping students with skills required for professional service for both Research/Development and production sector of the economy.

  • Specifically, to educate students on the practical applications of microbiology in dealing with the challenges posed by forces of nature.

  • To prepare the students to develop skills and techniques relevant to scientific research & development (R&D) in Nigeria and beyond.

  • To develop entrepreneurship skills to ensure self-reliance among graduates of the department.
