From the desk of the Librarian, Akwa Ibom State University.
Welcome to a New Academic Semester
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Second Semester of the 2016/2017 academic session. The University Library provides support to students in their studies and staff in their research areas. The Library is also equipped as assist everyone in making good use of knowledge, locate, select and acquire the information that is required from what may seem like a rather daunting mountain of material. The Library’s facilities, services and resources are precisely aligned to Akwa Ibom State
University’s strategic direction, and hence are geared towards supporting the academic and research goals of the University.
It can be recalled that the Librarian has instructed students during the first semester of the 2016/2017 session on Library Use instructions viz-a-viz: the Philosophy of the Library, New Students Library Orientation, Computer Literacy Skills and Library/Information Literacy Skills. However, since information is best taught in context, Library Use instructions is integrated throughout the curriculum. The library welcomes and encourages collaboration with lecturers in the development of courses which incorporate the Use of the Library and familiarize students with Library resources and Research strategies. Also, the Library provides resource support for class assignments, test and class projects.
Currently, AKSU students and faculties have access to SAGE and JSTOR. These are great databases that have hundreds of academic journal, articles and other scholarly resources. They are updated daily with new material, and undergraduate students across the globe find excellent information from them for their projects and papers. Our literature collection comprises 2 million holdings including more than 136,000 e-books as well as 2,000 printed journals and 39,500 e-journals covering Engineering, Natural Sciences, Social Science, Arts, Education and Agriculture. The Library has subscribed to about 75,000 electronic journals and over 163,000 electronic books. Students and staff of Akwa Ibom State University are encouraged to register as Library members so as to get full access to this wealth of resources.
The Library’s mission is to enable the staffs and students of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) to engage optimally with the ever changing information environment in order to succeed in their research, learning and teaching goals. I invite you to take advantage of the services available through our knowledgeable Library staff. Librarians at both of our libraries (main campus and Obio Akpa campus) can help you strategize your research needs, and find the best information for your projects and assignments. We call on members of the academic community to endeavour to always notify the Librarian of any upcoming students’ assignments which will require Library research. With this, the Library can help forestall students’ frustration by providing more informed help or by placing limited resources on reserve.

Once again, welcome to a brand new semester. God bless you!
